Living the #AventuraLife means being eco-conscious and active in one’s community.
Hometown: Coquitlam, British Columbia.
About Me: Karen Ung is married to her backpacking sweetheart and is a mother and lover of maps, mountains, and mochas. With her Geography degree and experience leading hikes and backpacking trips in the Canadian Rockies, she is full of ideas on where to go and what to do. The mission of her blog, Play Outside Guide, is to provide “everything families need to know to get outside and have fun.”
In addition to being a Brand Ambassador, Karen is an Alberta Parks Ambassador and Active for Life Role Model. You can find her on the slopes year round!
Favorite Spring ’17 Aventura pieces you are looking forward to trying: Kineta Skirt, Avis Top, Easton Dress
Favorite Blog: I follow so many, but really enjoy Hike Like a Woman.
Favorite Instagrammer or Pinner: @rockieschick22 and @macs_explore are two of my favorite Instagrammers. They go to the most amazing places!
Singing in the car or singing in the shower: Both! I sing when I'm hiking too (keeps the bears away).
Person that inspires you: Michelle Obama is an inspiration! Besides being intelligent and classy, she is an amazing communicator.
Favorite Book: The Nightingale is a beautifully written novel that tells the story of two sisters who are both heros in their own ways during World War II.
What are you listening to right now? Adele. I just love her!
Favorite movie of all time: I’m a sucker for Love, Actually.
Best piece of advice you ever received? When I was a judgy teen, my Dad told me to always be compassionate and kind because most people are “doing the best they can.” Now that I’m older, I appreciate the wisdom of those words.
What’s the most amazing experience you’ve had in your life (besides having babies and getting married)? Living in Japan for a couple years was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I made great friends, learned so much about myself and my maternal grandparents’ culture, and got to eat my favorite food every day!
Funny tidbit not everyone knows about you…but will now! I love traveling but my body doesn’t. I get really bad motion sickness. After hiking the West Coast Trail (75 km), my friends set up a puke pool guessing how many times I’d be sick on the 4.5 hour bus ride down a notoriously bad logging road. The highest guess was 12, but luckily my meds worked (they didn’t on the way in) and I slept the whole way.
What does #aventuralife mean to you? How do you live it? Living the #AventuraLife means being eco-conscious and active in one’s community. I live it by walking or biking as much as possible, and volunteering at my childrens’ school, nordic ski club (as coach), and outdoor playgroups.
