Aventura represents adventure and appreciation for this great-big world that I love, and I’m proud to represent it.

Hometown: Longmont, CO

About Me: I am a native of Colorado and love living in the same city where I grew up, Longmont. After completing my master's of journalism at CU Boulder in 2002, I wrote primarily freelance magazine articles until becoming a mom in 2006, when I took an extended break from writing. Before Michael and I became parents, we loved to travel and feared having kids would mean sacrificing it. Instead we soon realized we could enjoy traveling just as much with our two boys in tow, which in 2014 sparked the idea for Momfari.

Favorite Spring ’17 Aventura pieces you looking forward to trying: The Gia dress bc it's fairly feminine, which I don't tend to pick. I was stretching my tomboyish limits with this style!

Favorite Blog: More “magazine” than “blog,” I have to say Outdoor Families Magazine, not just because I’m a contributing editor/writer but also because its whole purpose is to get kids/families outside. I’m so honored to be part of such an amazing mission with three of the most passionate, talented moms in the blogosphere: Jennifer Fontaine, founder; Erin Kirkland, managing editor; and Traci Lehman, operations director.

Favorite Instagrammer or Pinner: I love Just a Colorado Gal because of our mutual love for Colorado and adventures, which she depicts in stunning shots from her professional-photographer husband.

Singing in the car or singing in the shower: Um, both. Is that really a question?

Person that inspires you: My mom, Kathy. She’s lived a tough life and had to make difficult decisions, especially as a young mom. But she’s always worked hard and tried to stay positive. As I say, she’s a small person (under 5’) with a big personality, and she’s amazing.

Favorite Book: One of the first books I really loved was “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. And I love just about any memoir or biography I’ve ever read.

What are you listening to right now? This very second? Phineas & Ferb because that’s what my 7yo son is watching on the TV. If I had my choice on music, however, I’d be listening to old-school rap/R&B, ‘80s music or any Top 40 station.

Favorite movie of all time: I can’t even begin to pick one, so I’ll pick one of my favorites from my ‘80s childhood: The Breakfast Club.

Best piece of advice you ever received? I used to be conflict-averse, and my husband, Michael, once said, “Just pretend everyone else is me, and then you won’t have trouble standing up to anyone.” Funny, but he was right. And now that I’m in my 40s, I’m more willing to say EXACTLY what I think, regardless of any resulting conflict.

What’s the most amazing experience you’ve had in your life (besides having babies and getting married): My husband and I vowed to go on an African safari before we had kids, so we spent two weeks in Zimbabwe in 2004. (Our first son was born in 2006.) We tracked rhino on foot (and were chased!), canoed the Zambezi amid hippos and crocodiles, and got so close to elephants that one splashed mud on us. I tell this to people all the time: There is absolutely NOTHING like an African safari. And if you love to travel, experiencing one should be at the top of your to-do list.

Funny tidbit not everyone knows about you…but will now! My mom says I could have started kindergarten when I was barely 5, but I was so shy that she waited until I was 6. I don’t think I’ve been accused of shyness since then!

What does #aventuralife mean to you? How do you live it?: Being active and getting outdoors is what keeps me (half) sane in my day-to-day life, a key #aventuralife philosophy. Aventura represents adventure and appreciation for this great-big world that I love, and I’m proud to represent it.
